Education

Pre-School / Kindergarten For 3 - 5 year olds

It is not compulsory for children in Victoria to attend Kindergarten but it can assist in developing social skills between children. Children can attend for as little as half a day 2-3 days each week.

Enrolment

Due to high demand it is recommended that you register your child at more than one kindergarten before they turn two.

Fees

It costs you to send your child to Kindergarten. You will need to discuss fees as part of the enrolment process, and you should expect to pay a deposit to secure your child's position.

Primary School For 5 - 12 year olds

In Australia there are public government schools and private schools. Children who turn 5 years of age by 30 April are required to attend primary school through to Year 6.

The school year begins in late January and runs over four terms until mid December.

Enrolment

Zoning takes precedence when you are considering which school to send your child. Neighbourhood schools have an obligation to accept students who live in their zone.

If you wish to send your child to another school you will need to contact that school personally.

Hours

Students are expected to attend school from 9.00am to 3.30pm.

Fees

Parents are required to pay for uniforms, some books, extra-curricular subjects and any school levies that the school may apply from time to time.

High School For 12 - 18 year olds

Students move to High School to commence year 7. High School is compulsory through to Year 10. Years 11 and 12 are optional.

Enrolment

Zoning is less likely to be a major factor when deciding which High School your child should attend.

There are a number of different types of High Schools.

* Government secondary schools (usually co-educational)
* Private independent schools
* Catholic schools
* Non-denominational schools, and
* Islamic schools.

Fees

Parents are required to pay for uniforms, some books, extra-curricular subjects and any school levies that the school may apply from time to time.

Universities and schools of Technical and Further Education (TAFE)

Provide what is known in Australia as 'tertiary education'.

* TAFE is Victoria's largest post-secondary education and training provider. It provides excellent job-specific training in a wide range of occupations for both school leavers and adults.

* Universities offer the bachelor degree as a basic undergraduate course, taking 3-4 years to complete. Students may then go on to postgraduate and master's degrees or doctorates.
