Hospitals There are both Private and Public Hospitals available in Victoria. In Victoria there are two types of Health Insurance to help cover your medical costs: * Medicare which is administered by the Australian Government * Private Health Insurance operated by private Insurance Companies Public Health Insurance The Australian Government offers two programs; 1. Medicare If you are eligible for Medicare you will have access to free public hospital as well as other health services. 2. Medicines The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) ensures that approved medicines are affordable to everyone. Private Health Insurance If you have a Certificate of Currency from your health fund in your home country, you may be able to transfer your current health insurance cover to an equivalent cover in Australia. Having Private Insurance allows patients to have more control in choosing their doctor in hospital and can substantially reduce their waiting time for elective surgery by having treatment in a Private Hospital. Private Health Insurance also covers most of the costs of other services not covered by Medicare, such as optical, dental, physiotherapy, pharmaceutical and ambulance. Children Provided you can give your doctor information about your child's immuninisation records before coming to Australia, the immunisation program will be completed here. It is hoped that all children will be immunised before starting school.
